It seems to be no surprise that Season have been playing together for over six years, yet it seems incredible that it has taken them that length of time to produce a full-length album.
The sum of James McGauran on guitars/keyboards, David Charles on bass/keyboards, and Bart Kowalski on drums/samples/bass, Season are renown in Melbourne; for the ferocity of their live shows, for the quality of the handful of releases which preceed their debut album, and for their constant (almost weekly) honing in pubs in and around Melbourne alongside some of the finest bands in Australia including International Karate, Disaster Plan, The Rebel Astronauts, Spod, Tooth, All India Radio, The Night Terrors, theHEAD, and Oneironaut.
The band have slowly but surely carved themselves a place in the musical fabric of Melbourne through their presence live, and have established a strong fan base through consistent radio airplay.
In 2000, the trio composed music for two short films, both of which were awarded "Best Original Soundtrack" in separate categories at the DIEGESIS 2000 multi-media arts festival.
But the time spent working on their debut album 'Avatar' has been well worth it. Recorded between August 2003 and April 2004 at Echidna Recordings in the beautifully leafy Christmas Hills just outside of Melbourne, AVATAR is a dense, smouldering collection of songs moulded by the trio and accented by contributions from musicians Karen Vogt (vocals on 'Throw Me To The Sky'), Emily Mould (trombone), Kelly Lane (violin), and Caz Gannell (cello).
'Avatar' is largely awash with instrumental compositions looming languidly in the tradition of International Karate, Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky, Silver Ray, New Zealand’s High Dependency Unit, and The Dirty Three.
The sense of the sublime which resonates throughout the album is the result of the bands countless live shows and a focus for structure and rhythm. The band though tend to cite artists as diverse as Tool, Radiohead, David Lynch soundtracks, and The Paradise Motel as being influences. Regardless of their heroes, the resulting tracks that form 'Avatar' solidify Season and the anticipation and eventual vibrance that permeates through their shows and their previous EP releases '2,551,446 Seconds', 'To Each Their Own' and 'She Is Watching'.
